While the task of recovering data (especially critical data) from failed storage volumes is one that is definitely best left to the experts, you can reach some useful conclusions about the nature of the possible failure, from the way in which the failure occurred.

If on boot-up your computer completely fails to see the hard drive in BIOS then it may well be your hard drive has suffered a complete physical failure. In the first instance check that your power and signal cables are okay and listen closely to the hard drive itself for any tell-tale sounds such as clicking or whirring.

On the other hand if your computer boots into its operating system satisfactorily but you find that you have very slow, or no, access to your data then there is a strong likelihood that the hard drive is beginning to develop bad sectors. In this situation the vital thing is not to run CHKDSK but to clone the drive first. If you don’t know how to do this then seek out someone with expertise in hard disk recovery.
